HEALDTON — Pamela Merritt Walker was born on Jan. 24, 1958, to Dock and Dawn Merritt. She graduated from Healdton High School in 1976 as the Valedictorian.
Pam ultimately completed a college Bachelor’s degree, and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology at East Central and Wichita State.
Pam married James Walker in 1992.
She worked as a youth services worker for 28 years in a large variety of capacities with children and young adults up through college age. She began as a low-level field worker and rose through the ranks to the director of a major program for Harris County Child Protective Services.
During the Bush administration, Pam was invited to the White House and received an award from Laura Bush. Mrs. Bush also helped Pam get a $750,000 grant to start a transition center for foster youth aging out of care. This center, located in the downtown Houston area ultimately was so successful that Pam traveled around the United States teaching other cities how to start their own similar programs.
Pam was diagnosed with Biliary Duct Cancer of the Liver about two months prior to her death on June 27, 2017.
Pam is survived by her sisters, Vickie Caldwell and Diana Mills; and her three sons, Coulton Merritt, Mikey Mills and Gabe Mills.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dock and Dawn Merritt; and by her brother, Warren Merritt, who has two surviving daughters, Misty and Melissa Merritt.
The memorial service for Pam was at Nassau Bay Baptist Church in Houston, on July 5, 2017. Family and friends are invited to a local memorial service for Pam at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the First Baptist Church, Healdton. A time of fellowship will follow.
